In Washington, D.C., leftist Airbnb hosts are planning to disrupt President-elect Donald J. Trump’s inauguration by removing their properties from rental platforms or increasing prices, with proceeds directed toward liberal causes. Initiated by Stacy Kane, a petition encourages this blackout approach in response to Trump’s election. However, support for the petition appears limited, with four signatures and two email addresses collected so far.
Kane, who manages a two-bedroom apartment in the Brookland neighborhood, has opted to take her listing off Airbnb during the inauguration. She aims to provide lodging for individuals joining planned protests rather than accommodating inauguration attendees. This decision aligns with anticipated protests, as an estimated 50,000 people are expected to participate in marches against Trump’s presidency on January 18, according to The Washington Post.
The host says she and her allies are “try[ing] to make any kind of difference that we can in the situation we find ourselves in as D.C. residents and just as human beings right now.”
